ABOUT THE ROLE:

This role will support the team to deliver the Casework Support Program (CSP) funded by Department of Communities & Justice – Youth Justice, with a focus on supporting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait young people and communities. This role will provide case management, group delivery and outreach support to young people who are involved in the youth justice system, this could include but not limited to, young people supervised by Youth Justice NSW, young people transitioning from custody into the community, young people with Youth Justice Conferences and young people receiving bail support. The CSP team aims to achieve positive change in the lives of young people 12-18years who are at-risk or involved in the criminal justice system.

This role will be a key connection to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander local communities and will assist young people and their mobs to access culturally safe services that meet their needs.

This role involves supporting young people from the Hawkesbury, Hills, Blacktown and Parramatta regions.

No on call or weekend work.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote a ‘risk-aware’ culture where staff proactively identify, report and address all forms of risk to clients, staff and Saints Care Ltd.
  • Provide an environment that is safe for children and vulnerable adults, free from harm and promoting staff commitment to safeguarding.
  • Follow processes in line with the organisations compliance for incident reporting, child protection, safeguarding and WHS
  • Ensure safety standards are maintained for self and others and all hazards and incidents are reported within appropriate timeframes.
  • Adherence to the services administrative and practice principles including outcomes reporting.
  • Work within complex youth presentations.
  • Provide casework support to young people at-risk or involved in the criminal justice system
  • Contribute towards program development and review
  • Provide trauma informed and client-centred case management to young people
  • Assist clients in practical needs such as housing, living skills, education and training and wellbeing.
  • Facilitate and develop group work programs/initiatives that aim to deter young people from criminal behaviours
  • Develop and participate in community outreach events/programs
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with various other external stakeholders (NGO’s, Schools, DCJ etc)
  • Be an advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families to ensure their voices are heard
  • Hold key connections with local Aboriginal Elders and mobs
  • Commitment to working respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Culturally and Linguistically diverse clients, communities and staff;
  • Other suitable duties as required from time to time to support the service within skill set, knowledge and scope of the role.

ABOUT YOU:

Essential requirements:

  • You must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torress Strait Islander
  • Tertiary qualifications in a Social Work, Psychology, Welfare or related areas
  • Experience working with and supporting young people with complex backgrounds and involvement in the criminal justice system
  • Knowledge and experience working from a trauma informed approach
  • Knowledge in juvenile justice, child and youth development, homelessness, safety planning and youth mental health
  • Experience in delivering casework support
  • Experience working with hard-to-engage young people
  • An understanding of the culture and strengths-based practices
  • Ability to be an advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated networking and advocacy skills with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in delivering group programs
  • Experience in managing crisis situations with a risk-adverse approach

Desirable requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience in the juvenile justice sector
  • Trained facilitator in evidence-based youth group programs

Other Mandatory Requirements:

  • National Criminal History Check
  • Working with Children’s Check
  • Current NSW Driver’s Licence
  • Access to a comprehensively insured vehicle
