The opportunity
CSIRO’s work spans various aspects of Australian life, aiming to enhance quality of life and improve economic and social outcomes across multiple industries through research and development. The Technical Solutions team within the Scientific Computing Services group delivers a range of services, including consultation, business analysis, scientific workflows, and client support, to support CSIRO’s strategic goals. The team also manages HPC services and technical support for a large and diverse user base.
To meet the growing needs of CSIRO’s HPC user community, the Scientific Computing group seeks an additional HPC technical specialist. This role involves supporting computational and data-intensive workflows, enhancing productivity by ensuring optimal use of CSIRO’s Scientific Computing platforms, and engaging with staff to understand and address their computing needs.
Your duties will include:
- Engage with Scientific Computing clients to understand needs and deliver solutions.
- Handle technically challenging tasks and use initiative to solve undefined problems.
- Act as a consultant and knowledge resource, providing technical guidance on Scientific Computing services.
- Contribute to the management and optimization of CSIRO’s HPC platforms.
- Assist clients in transitioning scientific workflows across computing platforms.
- Proactively identify and solve client problems; manage support requests and escalations.
- Develop and deliver specialized training for users.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and adhere to CSIRO’s values and policies.

To be considered you will need:
Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
- Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in science, engineering, computer science, information technology or another relevant field.
- Experience in providing services to users, including engaging with users to determine requirements, and knowledge of a range of application software and techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in supporting Linux environments including using bash or similar.
- Knowledge of software management including installation, licensing, updates, and configuration in Linux environments.
- Experience in the development of user documentation, technical guides, and training materials
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with independence and self-motivation within a team environment.
Desirable
- Experience in delivering HPC technical support, including the management of batch job systems.
- Experience with HPC software management such as installation, licensing, updates, configuration.
- Experience in the use of scripting or programming languages for application development in a Linux environment.
- Experience in delivering technical support in a HPC environment.
- Experience in delivering technical support for Windows HPC systems.
