Position Summary
Unit description
The Web, Publishing & Data visualisation Unit (WPDVU) is responsible for the AIHW’s web presence, the production and publication of over 200 print, print-ready and online outputs released on and through the AIHW websites every year.
The WPDVU is made up of 4 sub-teams, including the web team, the production and design team, the data visualisation team and the web development team.
WPDVU is directly responsible for, or plays a supporting role in managing, AIHW’s 8 unique websites – AIHW, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Performance Framework, Australian Mesothelioma Registry, GEN Aged Care Data , Housing Data, Indigenous Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Clearinghouse, Metadata Online Registry, and Regional Insights for Indigenous Communities.
The AIHW’s main website, www.aihw.gov.au (managed by WPDVU) was launched in 2017, after two years of planning, design and content migration. The brief was to support the release of individual reports and act as an information hub. However, its current structure makes navigation difficult and limits users’ ability to fully explore the available data. As a result, the website no longer meets the growing needs of the AIHW and its wide range of users and stakeholders.
The AIHW is now focused on improving its main website to provide a more personalised, targeted and effective user experience and has commenced a major project (Web Strategy Initiative) to shape the future of our main web presence.
Position overview
The Strategic Web Project Manager will work very closely with the web development team and will report directly to the Unit Head. This position will initially be offered as a non-ongoing 12–18 month role with the possibility of extension.
This position will play a key role in shaping AIHW’s new web strategy. You will work closely with the Unit Head (Director), the 4 sub-team leads (EL1s), senior executive co-leads (SES) and the ICT team.
Initially, the role will lead a Discovery Phase to gather key insights and ideas. This will involve a series of meetings and research to understand the needs and expectations of both internal and external audiences. You will also review global examples of data delivery websites to identify innovative approaches and best practice.
Additionally, you will be involved in other AIHW initiatives, including defining the types of content, how content will be published and the systems needed to support them.
By the end of this phase, you will have developed a detailed roadmap for the project that everyone involved can refer to throughout the website’s design, development, and launch.
We are looking for an experienced person to lead the development of our web strategy. You will be guided by the following directional statements:
- develop a new, ‘fit-for-purpose’ web presence that offers a modern platform tailored to our stakeholders’ needs, enabling seamless exploration/discoverability of data.
- develop a web-based tool that enables users to explore multiple datasets at various geographic or demographic levels.
- develop a public-facing website to share information, updates, key findings, and focused reports, while adhering to government web guidelines and accessibility standards.
- explore the use of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, as a key component of our web strategy – for example, to enhance site-wide search capabilities, making it easier for users to find and access relevant data and information.
- explore options for improving the content creation and web publishing process such as the implementation of an end-to-end content operations platform that replaces current disparate systems and manual workflows and can assist in content production using generative AI.
You will bring significant project experience and a deep understand of the importance of thorough investigation, gathering both technical and non-technical information. As a highly skilled communicator, you will think critically and strategically, be able to understand diverse perspectives and can synthesise this information to shape a clear and cohesive vision for the project.
If you’re someone who can lead with clarity, think strategically, and manage a complex project, we’d love to hear from you.
Under general direction you will:
- contribute to the delivery of the project, ensuring it aligns with the AIHW strategic goals, and achieves timely and successful completion.
- collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders, understand user needs, and drive the project forward.
- be a high-level thinker and a solution focused person who can deliver outcomes under limited direction.
- enjoy being part of a dedicated and creative team involved in a significant modernisation web project, working through issues and possible solutions in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Selection Criteria
Our ideal candidate will have most or all of the following skills and knowledge:
- Strong project management, research and analytical skills, with the ability to analyse complex information and translate it into clear, accessible materials for diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships and work constructively with senior leaders and key stakeholders to transform requirements into clear, actionable solutions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical users.
- Excellent organisational and time management abilities with a proven track record of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and delivering quality results within deadlines.
- Strong ability to use sound judgement to strategically coordinate and deliver business intelligence initiatives.
- Ability to think creatively and collaborate effectively with teams to address and solve complex business challenges.
- Capability to make informed decisions with limited guidance, based on expertise and a deep understanding of the issues at hand.
Desirable:
- Industry and government systems knowledge – Familiarity with government and industry systems for example digital service standards (DTA guidelines), web accessibility (WCAG AA compliance), UX, Google analytics and search optimisation.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this vacancy, you must:
- be an Australian citizen
- undergo any required pre-employment checks, including a police records check
