Sexual Health Promotion Officer (Syphilis)

The Sexual Health Promotion Officer directly reports to the Sexual Health and Blood Borne Viruses Program Coordinator and is accountable to the Executive Manager Public Health and CQI. The position is primarily responsible for increasing awareness in prevention and testing for Sexually Transmissible Infections (STI’s) and Blood Borne Viruses (BBV’s), with a particular focus on syphilis in Aboriginal people in Western Australia. In accordance with the Fifth National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander STI and BBV Strategy 2018 – 2022.  The incumbent will work closely with the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA) Member Services to provide a targeted regional response to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and improve testing rates to reduce the transmission rates of STI’s and BBV’s among Aboriginal people.

About You

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • A relevant qualification in Aboriginal Health, Health Promotion or Public Health or demonstrated experience working in these areas.
  • An understanding of continuous quality improvement practices in primary health care.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to develop ideas and opportunities to resolve issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, planning and delivery of health programs for a diverse range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Knowledge and/or an understanding of the current trends and issues affecting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities throughout the state.
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold the principles of cultural safety including an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • A current Western Australian Working with Children Card.

Ideally, in addition to be above, we are looking for someone who:

  • Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and is acknowledged as such by their community.
  • Has relevant clinical knowledge or demonstrated skills in the assessment and management of complex health needs including blood borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections.
  • Has experience working within the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health sector and a strong understanding and commitment to the sectors principles.

The position involves working within a multicultural organisation where the majority of employees, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate will be required to submit a National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months) prior to appointment.

Applicants for this position must be legally entitled to work in Australia and will be required to provide evidence of this entitlement, such as an Australian or New Zealand passport, birth certificate, or foreign passport with a relevant working visa.

Under AHCWA’s COVID-19 Safety Policy and Procedure, all employees will need to have had at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by 1 November 2021, and must be fully vaccinated (including any booster shots if required) by 1 December 2021. Applicants will be required to provide proof of vaccination prior to appointment. This includes either an immunisation history statement or a COVID-19 digital certificate.
