Sexual Assault Counsellor (Female Identified)

This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. What you’ll be doing:
The Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor will support engagement with Aboriginal communities,
stakeholders and clients; also providing cultural consultation to support non-Aboriginal clinicians working with First Nations children and families where appropriate. Professional development will be provided alongside generous clinical supervision, cultural supervision and peer supervision arrangements. The team will suit clinicians who enjoy diverse, fast paced, client-centred work with a strong dedication to reducing violence in the lives of individuals and communities whilst contributing to the decolonisation of NSW Health services.

You will have the opportunity to:
• Use your cultural knowledge to help inform and shape service delivery.
• Empower your team to provide for the safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal children through Aboriginal
consultation, cultural planning and other support services as required.
• Acquire new clinical skills and apply them to improve outcomes for vulnerable Aboriginal adults,
children and their families.
• Provide an Aboriginal perspective and advocate on behalf of Aboriginal people in the local communities.
• Improve services to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal adults, children, families and communities.
• Build strong relationships with partner agencies both within the sector as well as other government
agencies to support and strengthen families and cultural connections.

What you will bring to the role:
1. This is an identified Aboriginal Position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent. Exemption
is claimed under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal applicants must
demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the Selection Criteria. Being female is recognized
as a genuine occupation qualification for this position and is authorized under section 31(2h) of the
Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
2. Accepted qualifications include: • Qualification in Social Work which provides eligibility for full
membership to Australian Association of Social Workers or • Psychology: General registration with the
Psychology Board of Australia and, for Senior Psychologist, a current Senior Psychologist or eligible
for Senior Psychologist grading (with no less than 12 months service at the 9th year of service and
thereafter rate) and, for Clinical Psychologist, an accredited Masters or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with endorsement or working towards endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia.
3. Experience providing culturally appropriate trauma focused therapeutic supports for Aboriginal
individuals and families in regards to sensitive issues.
4. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
5. Demonstrated ability to create Aboriginal community connections, engagement, and collaborations.
6. Demonstrated understanding of the intersection between issues of intergenerational trauma,
colonisation, sexual assault, domestic violence and child protection.
7. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a therapeutic team and to manage competing tasks in
a busy service.
8. Current Drivers Licence and ability to attend Nepean Hospital within 1 hour to participate in the 24/7
crisis on-call service.
