Introduction

The Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group (NSSG) is seeking a highly experienced SES Band 1 to fill the role of Assistant Secretary Naval Construction and Waterfront – WA.

Naval Construction and Waterfront Branch – WA, is accountable for the productivity, quality and acceptance of ship construction products in Western Australia. It provides the Commonwealth an enduring knowledge and expertise in naval ship construction, shipyard activities, set-to-work, test, acceptance and delivery.

The Assistant Secretary Naval Construction and Waterfront – WA will report to the First Assistant Secretary Waterfront and Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment (W&CNSS), and is responsible for the leadership, development, coordination and delivery of all activity associated within the Naval Construction and Waterfront Branch – WA.

Your Role

As the Assistant Secretary Naval Construction and Waterfront – WA, you will lead and coordinate a highly complex ecosystem across shipbuilding and ship sustainment to leverage our knowledge, proximity to the waterfront and our continuous involvement in ship construction to progressively improve shipbuilding outcomes for Australia, in collaboration with our local and strategic partners.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the right skills and experience to be at the forefront of one of Australia’s most challenging and complex industrial undertakings. This is a whole-of-Government activity, executed in WA, requiring key stakeholder engagement acumen across industry and Federal and State governments.

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader, exemplify the Defence Values and Behaviours, and engender a culture of innovation and agility. They will be self-aware, positive in considering and respecting a diversity of ideas and perspectives of others. They will demonstrate the capability to provide timely and accurate advice to senior leaders and the Government on complex matters. They will have outstanding judgement, strategic awareness, and media acumen.

As a member of Defence’s senior leadership group, you must be able to promote a culture of innovation, collaboration and agility. You must also be able to effectively manage complex legislative and ethical frameworks to achieve capability outcomes for Defence, and the Australian Government. Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. To be eligible, you must be an Australian citizen.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a diverse team;
  • Extensive experience leading and delivering, large and complex government programs; and
  • Extensive experience working with complex stakeholders with competing requirement

 

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Experience in Defence, particularly with maritime related work.
  • Extensive experience working across multiple Government stakeholders.
  • Experience delivering joint public/private capital projects;
  • At least five years’ executive experience;
  • Experience in supply chain and industrial policy development and implementation.
