Position Summary
The Housing and Specialised Services Group (HSSG) develops, collects and analyses data to support reporting and policy decisions on the health and welfare of, and provision of services to, a range of Australians. This includes:
• The use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and alcohol and other drug treatment services.
• People experiencing homelessness or needing assistance with housing.
• Children placed for adoption and their families, and children and young people in contact with the child protection system.
• Young people experiencing the youth justice system.
• The health and welfare of people who are in prison.
• The experience of teachers through the Australian Teacher Workforce Dataset, and other education projects.
HSSG are looking for Project Officers and Data Analysts to fill multiple positions within the following Units
(merit list will be used to fill future vacancies across the HSSG):
Child Welfare Unit – Project Officer, First Nations reporting team – position in Canberra Office
The Child Welfare Unit First Nations reporting team is responsible for two annual releases for Child Protection Australia (CPA) Report. CPA: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and CPA: Pathways from Out-of-Home-Care. In addition, the team is responsible for data development projects to support the National Agreement on Closing the Gap reporting and reporting to support Safe and Supported: National Framework to Protect Australia’s Children (Safe and Supported). The Project Officer will be responsible for managing two small projects. The first project will support data development for Safe and Supported. And the second project will manage the release of CPA Pathways from Out-of-Home-Care.
Under general direction the successful candidate will:
• Undertake external stakeholder consultation with both government and non-government organisations
• Prepare committee papers for consultation
• Manage two small projects
• Manage staff
• Support data analytical activities across the unit
Housing and Homelessness Reporting and Development Unit – Project Officer
The Housing and Homelessness Reporting and Development Unit is responsible for delivering evidence about homelessness support services and housing assistance provided to Australians in need. The Unit is also responsible for supporting states and territories to develop nationally consistent data definitions for national reporting requirements.
The Project officer will primarily be responsible for authoring reports, writing and/or coordinating technical working group papers,
Under general direction you will:
• Authoring reports using data provided by analysts
• Contribute to the effective coordination of projects
• Prepare technical committee papers for consultation
• Perform a range of technical and administrative tasks
• Supervise staff and work collaboratively across the unit supporting the supervisor and unit head and contribute more broadly across the group.
Housing and Homelessness Collection Processing Unit – Data Analyst
The Housing and Homelessness Collection Processing Unit (HHCPU) undertakes a variety of data processing, data sharing and data release activities focused on AIHW-managed housing and homelessness data collections. The Unit works closely with the Housing and Homelessness Reporting and Development Unit and the Housing and Homelessness Collection Operations Unit to deliver a national housing and homelessness work program overseen by Commonwealth and state and territory government departments with responsibility for housing and homelessness. The HHCPU is looking for a motivated data analyst who can work with the team to process and transform the Specialist Homelessness Services data into various data products to meet various stakeholder needs and inform this important policy area.
Under general direction, this role includes:
• Working with large databases to undertake routine statistical analysis and processing
• Manipulating and interrogating data using a range of software (including SAS, SQL, Tableau and other software)
• Processing customised data for ad-hoc and linkage requests and assisting in relevant communication to support data interpretation
• Supporting stakeholder engagement processes including documenting stakeholder needs and preparing data for supply in accordance with relevant AIHW policies and protocols
• Working collaboratively with the team, Unit Head and other staff within the unit and group.
Selection Criteria
Our ideal candidate will have most or all of the following skills and knowledge:
1. Demonstrated experience in extracting, interrogating and analysing complex data sets using software such as SAS, SQL and Tableau (for data analyst roles only)
2. Experience in providing project support including coordinating meetings with project teams, taking minutes, and preparing project plans (for project office roles only)
3. Well-developed technical writing skills.
4. Good written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
5. Demonstrated organisational skills including the ability to prioritise one’s workload and escalate issues when required.
6. Sound interpersonal skills, including the ability to work within, and contribute to, a team. Relevant qualifications will be highly regarded.
