About us

The Inspector of Custodial Services (ICS) is appointed to inspect adult correctional facilities and youth justice centres, and report to Parliament on the findings of these inspections. The ICS also oversees the Official Visitor Program in correctional facilities and youth justice centres.

About the role

Official Visitors work to resolve enquiries and complaints made by inmates and assist in monitoring the conditions and treatment of inmates in custodial centres throughout New South Wales (NSW). Official Visitors are community-based appointments made by the Minister for Corrections.

Successful applicants are normally assigned to one custodial centre for up to four years to conduct half day or full day visits to the centre either once a fortnight or once a month.

Applications are invited for appointments to centres across NSW, including for centres located in the following areas- Grafton and Clarence Valley region, Junee and Wagga Wagga region, Kyogle and Casino region, Lismore and Ballina region, Wellington / Dubbo region. Suitable candidates may be added to a talent pool to fill any appointments that may become vacant over the next 18 months.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Role requirements

• Report writing skills, computer skills, and access to the internet and email
• Ability and willingness to travel to attend training or corporate activities when required (1 or 2 times per year)
• Successfully complete a NSW Police National Criminal History Record Check and fingerprinting, along with criminal record and association disclosures.
