Manager, Indigenous Engagement – Identified (s25)

About This Opportunity

In collaboration with the Faculty Executive, this position will play a key role in facilitating and enhancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation, engagement strategies and action plans across the Faculty of Science. This will include capacity building and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait staff Islander staff and students both within the University and across communities.

Key responsibilities include:

  •  Support the development and implementation of a Cultural Competency Framework with the aim to build capability and effective collaboration across the Faculty of Science.
  • Support the Faculty to achieve its strategic objectives to build relationships with Indigenous peoples; organisations and communities across Australia.
  • Work in collaboration with the relevant staff in the Faculty to leverage productive links with relevant internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities for the Faculty to support projects in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • In consultation with relevant stakeholders including the UQ’s Manager, Indigenous Employment and UQ’s Human Resources team, provide advice and support to enable the attraction recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff through the delivery of the UQ Indigenous Career Pathways and Retention Strategy.
  • Provide advice and support to enable attraction, recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (undergraduate, postgraduate and HDR) and provide mentorship, guidance, pastoral and cultural care to ensure retention of students within the Faculty of Science.
  • Provide advice and support to the Faculty communications teams on appropriate content and representation of Indigenous stakeholders and related teaching and research.
  • Support the Faculty Executive to identify risks that could impact on the effectiveness of the Faculty of Science’s impact and collaboration with Indigenous stakeholders.
  • Promote and support the Faculty’s collaborative partnership with the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) to ensure the Faculty of Science is in alignment with the Indigenous strategy.
  • In collaboration with Faculty of Science Executives support the implementation of the UQ Reconciliation Action Plan across Faculty of Science and be an active member of the Science Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

About You

The successful candidate will be required to provide evidence to confirm that they are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills appropriate for interacting with both Indigenous and non- Indigenous stakeholders including the initiative, drive, and flexibility to achieve results.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultural heritage, economic development issues and the ability to correctly identify Traditional Owner Groups and engage effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Comprehensive communication skills, including facilitation, the ability to prepare comprehensive reports and make recommendations, conflict management, complaints resolution, presentation skills, strategic relationship management and a proven track record of influencing others to achieve co-operation at senior levels with internal, external stakeholders and the community.
  • An ability to initiate and support the implementation of strategic plans and programs and to affect high level stakeholder and organisational buy-in with proven ability to manage effectively through ambiguity to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Exceptional organisational skills with the demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, with a commitment to quality outcomes, the ability to work under pressure and establish priorities regarding workload and to work both independently and as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop research initiatives.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check.
