Linux System Administrator

The opportunity

ASIO is seeking to fill Linux System Administrator positions in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth locations.

A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this
position. This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.

Role responsibilities 

As a Linux System Administrator, you will:

  • Play a key role in managing and supporting Linux-based systems to facilitate the secure transfers of data between different networks in support of ASIO’s mission.
  • Build, enhance and sustain technical capabilities that deliver data to destination environments.
  • Administer systems using appropriate tools and techniques that conform to agreed industry, enterprise and security standards.
  • Work in a diverse team environment, sharing outcomes and experience with others to support development and growth

This role sits within the Data Flows team who provide architecture, management and support of secure Cross Domain Solutions and data flows. The team acts as a digital post office through automated routing of data to and/or from systems including the collection of data feeds to be ingested and distributed to production systems.
What you will bring

The Role Description above provides an overview of the Linux System Administrator function in general. Depending on the level of position you wish to apply for, the required skills will vary.

For AE4-AE5 roles we invite applications from people with the following attributes:

  • Technology skills.
  • Previous experience with Linux Command Line.
  • An aptitude and desire to learn.

AEE1 candidates should be able to demonstrate well-developed Data Flow skills and experience that meet all of the following criteria whilst AE6 applicants should show skills and experience across many of the following:

Required Skills

  • The ability to design, implement, and optimise Data tooling and Linux-based systems.
  • The ability to create and maintain standardised tooling and techniques, ensuring a consistent approach, accompanied by thorough testing and documentation.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and resolve system issues to minimise downtime.
  • A proven ability to craft technical documentation and effectively collaborate using a variety of tools to ensure seamless tracking and communication

Other Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency in Linux System Administration.
  • Experience in a range of monitoring and alerting platforms.
  • Knowledge about automated deployments
  • Knowledge in designing and building integrations to facilitate interactions between systems, via API’s and Object Stores.
  • Knowledge in Cyber Security.
  • Knowledge in technologies that control the flow of data.
  • Aligned SFIA skills, such as:
    • Systems Integration and Build (SINT).
    • Systems Development Management (DLMG).
  • Minimum 3 year’s technology capability development experience is desirable but not essential for consideration at the higher levels (AE6 and EL1).
  • Tertiary qualification in a technology field is desirable but not essential

Employment conditions

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are
similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the
Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth
schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
