About the role:

The Lead, Government Relations, has a close working relationship with the Manager, Policy & Government Relations and the Policy & Government Relations team.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and nurture strong working relationships across the organisation and with key external stakeholders, including with ministerial advisers and staff in government departments as well as partner organisations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Promoting the work VicHealth delivers across the Victorian community and raising awareness about its role as an innovative, world-leading health promotion agency with government and key parliamentary stakeholders
  • Developing and delivering an overarching government relations strategy aligned with VicHealth’s strategy
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with government and members of parliament
  • Providing timely and strategic advice regarding developments in government to senior executives and other stakeholders within VicHealth
  • Supporting the development and implementation of VicHealth’s strategic policy agenda
  • Leading the drafting and finalisation of relevant policy submissions, advocacy papers, position statements on key issues, briefing documents, and other government-related activities

About you:

We’re looking for someone who will be a confident and capable relationship builder to advocate internally and externally for VicHealth’s strategy, purpose and aspirations. They must be able to provide exemplary liaison; demonstrate strong communication skills; and represent VicHealth in a professional manner.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in public policy or a related field
  • Previous experience working in government as a policy adviser or ministerial or electorate staffer at either state or federal levels or;
  • Previous experience working in government relations or advocacy with a statutory authority or not-for-profit
  • Well-developed and applied knowledge of the machinery of government including government decision making, policy and budget processes
  • Experience developing and delivering roundtables and related government relations events
  • Experience in public health or community health is desirable but not essential
