The opportunity

  • Be part of a large-scale initiative creating impact in energy efficiency in households
  • Multiple casual opportunities available across Sydney & Brisbane, with on-the-job training
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s National Science Agency – in shaping the future of smart, energy-efficient apartments!

Are you passionate about innovative IoT (Internet of Things) technology and eager to make an impact in energy efficiency? CSIRO’s ‘Building Energy Efficiency’ Team is looking for four enthusiastic Installers, based in Sydney and Brisbane, to join an exciting large-scale project aimed at understanding how apartment dwellers use energy in their homes.

In this role, you will be a part of the Apartment Energy Behaviour Study (AEBS), funded by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW). The Project involves a series of long-term monitoring studies in apartments across Australia, at the single occupancy unit scale, to evaluate how closely the assumptions made by the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) about occupant behaviour match with real outcomes.

As part of this cutting-edge initiative, the Installers will be traveling around either Sydney or south-east Queensland installing into strata apartments, IoT devices that monitor the environment of the apartment (i.e., thermal comfort and air quality) and occupant behaviour. Each installation takes about one hour, and this role offers you a chance to contribute to meaningful work that will improve research on apartment energy efficiency and environmental comfort!

The IoT devices are small & discrete, and installation will be straight forward. However, you will receive comprehensive on-the-job training, tailored to ensure confidence in performing each installation, and whether you’re looking for a deep dive into IoT technology or just the essentials, we provide the level of training you need to feel fully prepared and supported in your role. You will be working on an ad-hoc/as-needed basis, approximately working up to 25 hours per week within regular business hours, with guidance and oversight from the Project Leader.

If you have a keen interest in this field, with strong attention to detail, communication & time management skills, we would love to hear from you!

Your duties will include:

  • Installing IoT sensors using simple, non-invasive adhesive labels (most of these devices are battery operated, so simply ‘set and forget’).
  • Scanning each apartment with an iPad to generate a detailed floor plan.
  • Conducting a brief audit of the apartment’s design and appliances (this is a checklist).
  • Responding courteously and efficiently to client requests and maintaining clear communication regarding mutual expectations.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and business unit to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO scientific objectives.
  • Other duties as directed.

Location: Sydney NSW (2 positions) and Brisbane QLD (2 positions)

Salary: AU$38.37 – AU$48.84 per hour, plus 25% casual loading and up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified Term of 3 months;  Part-time/Casual (approx. 25 hours per week, on an ad-hoc/“as-needed” basis, during regular business hours)

Reference: 98499

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant Qualification or Work Experience: Minimum requirement of a ‘Certificate IV in Home Energy Efficiency and Sustainability’, and/or demonstrated experience or qualifications in a relevant field such as architecture, engineering, environmentally sustainable design, building monitoring, post-occupancy evaluation, or home energy assessment.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to conduct accurate audits of apartment designs and appliances based on checklists and capture detailed floor plans using a provided iPad.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills for entering and working within residents’ homes respectfully and professionally.
  • Reliability and Time Management: Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to arrive on time and complete installations within the allocated timeframe.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to carry out installation tasks that may require bending, reaching, or carrying small devices across various apartment settings.
  • Current Driver’s License: A valid Australian driver’s licence, and the flexibility to travel to various installation locations within the assigned regions.
  • Current Working With Children Check: Ability and willingness to obtain and provide evidence of holding a valid paid/employee (not volunteer) Working with Children/Vulnerable People Check.
