HVAC Technician

The HVAC technician role is part of the Facilities team and works under limited direction and supervision to perform installation work, routine maintenance tasks, modifications and fault repair of complex antenna and building HVAC systems as well as mentoring apprentices and managing contractors as required to fulfil external maintenance contracts.

The opportunity

The HVAC technician role is part of the Facilities team and works under limited direction and supervision to perform installation work, routine maintenance tasks, modifications and fault repair of complex antenna and building HVAC systems as well as mentoring apprentices and managing contractors as required to fulfil external maintenance contracts. The HVAC Technician has varying levels of responsibilities, determined in consultation with the Facilities Team Leader.

Your duties will include:

  • Respond to faults, complaints, audits, and incidents, coordinating with internal and external contacts, including CSIRO and JPL.
  • Maintain the site’s Building Management System (BMS), promptly addressing alarms and faults.
  • Perform installations, upgrades, and provide specialist advice on complex issues to the Facilities Team Leader and customers.
  • Supervise contractors and ensure compliance with security, licensing, and safety standards, as well as mentor apprentice HVAC technicians.
  • Update maintenance schedules, configuration management systems, and participate in Facilities Inspections, providing reports as needed.
  • Follow procurement procedures for goods and services, and use maintenance systems to improve efficiency and system reliability.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, support health and safety initiatives, and adhere to CSIRO’s Code of Conduct and diversity goals.

Location: Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) Tidbinbilla, ACTSalary: AU$83,562 to AU$93,748 pa, plus Tracking Station Allowance of $123.95 per week, plus annual Antenna Allowance, plus + up to 15.4% superannuationTenure: IndefiniteReference: 98555

  • Education/Qualifications: Trade qualification as a Refrigeration Mechanic.
  • Certifications:
    • ACT Driver’s License
    • White Card
    • Working with Asbestos Certification
    • Silica-Dust Awareness Certification
  • Experience: Established working experience within an industrial maintenance or operations environment.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
  • Licenses/Training (current or obtainable within 3 months):
    • Forklift License
    • Working at Heights and Confined Spaces training
    • Elevated Work Platform (EWP) License

Desirable Criteria:

  • Additional qualification in HVAC, PLC, or building maintenance.
  • Familiarity with Maximo and/or SAP business management systems.
