Context Statement: Batchelor Institute is the only First Nations dual sector tertiary education provider in Australia. The Institute is uniquely positioned to recognise multiple ways of being, doing and knowing in the world. The Institute recognises the Sovereignty of multiple Nations and privilege the positioning of First Nations peoples as knowledge holders in all educational transactions with Western knowledge systems. To play a key role in understanding of Council’s vision to enlist First Nation’s perspectives, philosophies and practices in all learning and teaching and operations of the Institute.
Primary Objective: The Dean Faculty of Tertiary Education and Research (Dean FTER) is the key leadership role with accountability for the strategic leadership, growth, quality, and day-to-day operations of the Institute’s FTER Program as the provider of choice for First Nations peoples. This role ensures quality FTER outcomes are developed and delivered in a flexible, innovative and culturally appropriate way, and business development opportunities are created. This role reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is part of the Executive Leadership Team and plays an active role in developing and implementing the overall strategic direction for the Institute.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and meet the TEQSA re-registration reporting and regulatory requirements.
- Provide high level strategic advice to the CEO, Academic Board and Executive Leadership Advisory Team regarding contemporary FTER programs that meet the needs of students.
- Provide strategic leadership and management to ensure the development, delivery and review of contemporary FTER programs and curriculums align to the strategic vision of the Institute including management of financial and human resources.
- Ensure all governance, quality and educational standards and reporting requirements are met.
- Create an academic environment through constructive leadership practices that encourages scholarship, responsive student-centered learning and teaching, research and research training, language and support programs to ensure student success.
- Implement a program to develop a high-quality level 7-degree program and the removal of the TEQSA condition around self-accreditation.
- Develop effective relationships and partnerships with internal and external key stakeholders to ensure collaborative relationships that support the delivery of successful FTER programs.
- Identify and secure diversified sources of revenue consistent with the ethos of Batchelor Institute.
- Participate in high level academic and other meetings.
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities and organisations.
- Demonstrated executive level leadership and experience in the FTER sector including business planning, resolution of complex operational issues, finance management, leading complex projects and driving innovation.
- Proven influencing skills with the ability to manage complex relations with internal and external stakeholders and lead change to achieve educational and business outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience and success in developing and implementing a quality framework in an academic context, driving continuous quality improvement and ensuring appropriate governance.
- Proven success in business development and sourcing alternative revenue streams to support ongoing financial viability.
- Postgraduate qualification(s) and/or extensive leadership and management experience in a senior position in higher education.
- High level human resource and financial management skills.
- Ability to quickly acquire knowledge of the Institute’s structure, functions and objectives.
