The opportunity
ASIO is seeking to fill Data Analytics Engineering positions in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth locations.
A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this
position. This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.
Role responsibilities
As a Data Analytics Engineer, you will:
- Play a key role in unlocking the value of data by managing, transforming, operationalising and optimising data for the purpose of analytics in support of ASIO’s mission.
- Develop and manage the integration of data into analytic products through appropriate tools and techniques that conform to agreed process and industry standards.
- Work in a diverse team environment, sharing outcomes and experience with others to support development and growth.
- Support and enable analyst use cases by building data products that deliver specific benefits.
his role sits with the Data Engineering team, who support the Enterprise by providing data that is fit-for-purpose, complete, accurate, and consistent for end users. The team employs contemporary and innovative tools and techniques to automate the ingestion of data. Part of the role will be ensuring that all development is in line with standard engineering and technical approaches employed by the team, and that risks associated with deployment are adequately understood and documented.

For AE4-AE5 roles we invite applications from people with the following attributes:
- Technology skills.
- Previous experience with coding.
- An aptitude and desire to learn
AEE1 candidates should be able to demonstrate well-developed Data Engineering skills and experience that meet most of the following criteria whilst AE6 applicants should show skills and experience across many of the following:
Required Skills
- An understanding and designing data solutions targeted at helping analysts unlock insights.
- The ability to develop, deploy and maintain scalable data integration solutions using SQL and Python.
- The ability to create and maintain standardised tooling and techniques, ensuring consistent data engineering approaches, accompanied by thorough testing and documentation.
- The ability to expertly combine data sources using various pre-processing techniques, including transformation, integration, normalisation and feature extraction, to create valuable data structures.
- The ability to conduct data quality assurance and perform remediation as needed.
- A proven ability to craft technical documentation and effectively collaborate using a variety of tools to ensure seamless tracking and communication
Other Desirable Skills and Experience
- Proficiency in platform engineering, including containerisation.
- Skills in designing and building APIs to facilitate seamless integration.
- Proficiency in technologies that control the flow of data.
- Knowledge about search optimisation
- Experience in a range of data storage platforms, including:

- Online Analytical Processing (OLAP).

- Relational databases (RDBMS).

- Document stores.
- Aligned SFIA skills, such as:

- Data Engineering (DENG).

- Data Modelling & Design (DTAN).

- Database Design (DESN).

- Programming (PROG)
- Minimum 3 year’s Data Engineering or Programming (ideally in Python) experience is desirable but not essential for consideration at the higher levels (AE6 and EL1).
- Tertiary qualification in a technology field is desirable but not essential

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are
similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the
Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth
schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
