The School of Professional Practice and Leadership (SPPL) in the Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is actively seeking motivated and enthusiastic applicants to join our casual academic tutor pool. Applications are welcomed from a broad range of areas and disciplines.
The School
SPPL is an interdisciplinary school within FEIT that equips students with the professional skills essential for success in engineering and IT careers. Our programs emphasise not only technical proficiency but also professional skills and the broader social, environmental, and economic contexts critical to the work of engineers and IT professionals.
Our engineering and IT undergraduate and postgraduate programs equip students with essential interdisciplinary and professional skills needed for modern engineering and IT careers including design and systems thinking, project management, effective communication, and business and economics. Students also engage with critical areas such as sustainability, innovation, humanitarian engineering, and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, ensuring they are prepared to tackle contemporary Australian and global challenges.

The Position
As a casual academic tutor in SPPL, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of interdisciplinary professional engineering and IT practitioners at our city campus in Ultimo.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Preparing and delivering active and engaging undergraduate and postgraduate tutorial classes or workshops.
- Providing guidance on study skills, time management, and assignment preparation.
- Cultivating positive and engaging learning environments for students.
- Timely marking and feedback, both in and outside class, which supports student development.
This recruitment is for inclusion into the school’s casual academic pool and does not guarantee ongoing work. Hours will vary each semester based on student demand, subject offerings, and subject availability.
What We’re Looking For
We seek candidates with the following qualities and qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and facilitate engaging activities within diverse groups,
- Willingness to expand your skills and knowledge to support diverse subjects and students,
- A background or experience in areas relevant to the school’s interdisciplinary programs, including engineering or IT professional practice, project management, professional/transferable skills development, and/or communications and academic writing, and
- A bachelor’s or postgraduate degree or commensurate industry experience (in a related discipline to the above capabilities, not limited to engineering or IT)
- Current and valid work rights in Australia.
(Optional) Applicants with expertise in any of the following areas would be of particular interest to the school at this time:
- Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities and Peoples, and/or Humanitarian Engineering/Community Development,
- Sustainability,
- Business, economics, and finance, or
- Engineering and/or IT Management.
Note that we do not necessarily expect previous teaching experience, we welcome commensurate industry experience and professional skills that can be translated to the classroom.
What We Offer You
We value our tutors and offer a competitive hourly rate between $55 and $70 (dependent on qualifications), in accordance with the University of Technology Sydney Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.
Most classes will include additional paid preparation hours to prepare for class and/or attend preparation meetings. Dependent on class requirements, remuneration may also include additional paid activities such as marking. This is paid at the same hourly rate.
