Australian Associated Press, Australia’s independent national newswire, has been delivering accurate, reliable and objective news content for 90 years.  AAP is a not-for-profit media company committed to fact-based, public interest journalism for all Australians. 

AAP is offering multiple one-year, paid editorial cadetships to exceptional candidates. The Sydney-based program commences in early 2025, providing thorough training in contemporary journalism and a wide variety of reporting experiences.

The Program

Cadets will gain on-the-job experience across multiple journalistic rounds, including breaking news, courts, politics, fact-checking and sports. 

Practical experience and mentoring will be complemented by routine training sessions with a focus on developing story ideas, and writing sharp, accurate and engaging content across a range of subjects and formats. 

Successful candidates will contribute stories to the newswire throughout their cadetship.

Candidates must have:

• Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience
• A deep understanding of current affairs and strong general knowledge
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Aspirations for a long-term career as a journalist
• Multimedia skills and a passion for creating multi-faceted content 
• A growth mindset and the ability to take direction and feedback 
• A portfolio of published work
• Work rights for Australia, and availability to work at AAP’s Sydney headquarters
