Board Member

Brisbane Youth Service [BYS], a respected leader in the Community Services Industry is seeking expressions of interest from First Nations professionals with industry and sector knowledge to apply for the position of Board Member. 33% of young people accessing BYS services identify as First Nations and BYS is committed to ensuring that the diversity of our young people is reflected in the make-up of our Board Members.

About the Board

The BYS Board provides governance and strategic leadership to position the organisation for maximum impact. The responsibilities of the Board vary depending on the challenges the organisation is experiencing. The work of BYS is complex and the expectations regarding integrity and accountability to a variety of stakeholders are high.

The current BYS Board is made up of members with skills, qualifications and experience across governance, business, financial management, legal, ethics, social work, and marketing.

Time Commitment

Board meetings are held monthly at 4:00p.m. at the Fortitude Valley office and are approximately two hours in duration. In addition, the Board holds two strategy days per annum. Board members are expected to review papers prior to meetings, and attend the Annual General Meeting held annually in November. Board members may also elect to be involved in the audit and risk committee.

  • National Police Check Clearance [paid and organised by BYS]
  • Two referees – a personal reference and a professional reference
  • Evidence of double COVID-19 vaccination

How to Apply

To be considered for this Board position please provide your curriculum vitae and a cover letter outlining:

  • Interest in joining the Board of Brisbane Youth Service Incorporated and your understanding of the non-profit sector
  • Skills, knowledge and/or experience, particularly referencing non-profit sector, large-scale community housing projects, housing and homelessness and/or philanthropic and fundraising
  • Understanding of, or the ability to acquire an understanding, of the Associations Incorporations Act 1981 and the requirements of Boards of incorporated associations
  • Ability to actively contribute to a positive Board culture, robust decision making and the organisations strategic direction and long-term sustainability

BYS is seeking expressions of interest from First Nations professionals to complement the balance of skills and experience of existing Board Members. While the Board would like to receive applications from all interested persons, applicants who have specific experience with non-profit sector Boards, finance and accounting, large-scale community housing projects, housing and homelessness and/or philanthropic and fundraising experience would be considered favourably.
