Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peer Worker (Identified) – Youth Enhanced Services

  • Part-time (0.6FTE – negotiable) position until July 2025, with the potential to extend
  • Based in Port Macquarie (Birpai lands), with outreach work within the community 
  • 37.52 – $40.97 p/Hour (subject to experience) + Super + Salary Packaging of up to $18,550 

Are you an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander individual with lived experience in mental illness, substance dependence, or trauma? Do you have a passion for helping others navigate their recovery journey? We invite you to be a beacon of hope and support as a Peer Worker at EACH!

As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peer Worker within our Youth Enhanced Services (YES), you will play a pivotal role in supporting individuals through their recovery journey by:

  • Offering 1:1 peer support both onsite and through outreach, facilitating peer support groups, and delivering secondary consultation and education
  • Drawing from your own transformative experiences to build genuine, empathetic relationships with clients, focusing on hope, choice, self-determination, and social connectedness
  • Implementing Intentional Peer Support principles to foster deep, meaningful connections and guide clients towards their recovery goals and aspirations
  • Collaborating with clinical staff and other service providers to enhance the understanding and delivery of holistic, inclusive, and recovery-oriented mental health and alcohol and other drug (MHAOD) services
  • Engaging in monthly peer supervision, reflective practice sessions, and consumer perspective training to ensure best practice within a recovery-oriented framework

About the program
EACH is the Lead Agency of the Therapeutic Alliance (TA), a consortium of community based, not-for-profit organizations who provide mental health services across the North Coast of NSW through a multidisciplinary, person centred, hub-and-spoke model of care.

The alliance offers a range of services under the Primary Mental Health Program (PMHP), including Healthy Minds, the Mental Health Nursing Incentive Program, Youth Enhanced Services (YES), Suicide Prevention, Counselling Support, and Low Intensity Mental Health programs.
About you
This is an identified position with a genuine occupational requirement for the position to be filled by a candidate Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community. We encourage applications from these communities, in line with Affirmative Measures under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and Division 2 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1997 (NSW).

Our ideal candidate will also possess the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Proven lived experience of mental illness, substance dependence, or trauma, and a profound understanding of the recovery journey
  • Strong skills in group facilitation, written and verbal communication, and proficiency in IT
  • A commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with an inclusive, non-judgmental approach and an understanding of trauma-informed care
  • Exceptional collaboration skills, with a positive, person-centred approach, and a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work and/or Intentional Peer Support core training (highly desirable)
