Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer – Aboriginal Identified Position

  • Fixed-term, part-time position until June 30th, 2025.0.6 FTE. Hybrid working model. Carlton and WFH.
  • $37.35p/h + 11.5% super + Charity salary packaging tax benefits.
  • SCHADS Award Level 3, Pay Point 1.

Diabetes Victoria is seeking a passionate and culturally aware Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer to work towards improving the health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Victorians living with diabetes. This role is an Aboriginal Identified Position and focuses on supporting and implementing culturally relevant initiatives, engaging with Aboriginal communities (particularly with Aboriginal men living with, or at risk of, diabetes), and collaborating with key stakeholders to raise awareness, promote diabetes prevention, and manage complications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community stakeholders, including VACCHO.
  • Collaborate with the Aboriginal Health Coordinator to enhance community engagement with Aboriginal communities and workforce across Victoria
  • Respond to enquiries from health professionals and the community.
  • Represent Diabetes Victoria on the NDSS Aboriginal Working Group.
  • Support and advise Diabetes Victoria staff to ensure culturally appropriate programs and resources.
  • Lead Aboriginal community awareness and engagement activities focused on men’s health.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Qualification in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, health, or welfare-related discipline is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the health workforce, particularly in men’s health, is desired.
  • Proven ability to build trusting and lasting relationships with stakeholders, particularly within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
  • Understanding health promotion principles and the needs of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience delivering content to small and large groups.

Please Note: This role involves providing programs and services to Aboriginal males to promote their welfare. This role is only available to people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and meet the selection criteria. This is permitted under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) and section 27 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).
