Aboriginal Community Engagement and Support Officer

Westmead Applied Research Centre (WARC) was established by the University of Sydney in collaboration with the Western Sydney Local Health District, to specifically address the causes of chronic disease, with a focus on translational research that addresses the specific needs and circumstances of vulnerable patients and communities. WARC’s aim is to create, evaluate and apply innovative clinical and digital health approaches to reduce the burden of cardiometabolic and other chronic conditions. WARC celebrates a research approach that thinks and acts flexibly, aims to do more with less, embraces technology in health care, sees co-design and partnership as necessities for translation and impact, and consistently views its activities through the lens of value and equity.

In this role, you will work under the guidance of Chief Investigator – Dr. Sarah Zaman , a leading cardiologist.

The Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer will play a key role in fostering positive relationships between Westmead Applied Research Centre (WARC) and Aboriginal communities and consumers. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to engage Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal consumers who are keen to be part of co-design groups.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Act as a liaison between Aboriginal communities and WARC, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Work in collaboration with First Nations communities and organisations to assist in developing consumer engagement and establishing connections with ACCHS, Aboriginal communities, community leaders and organisations.
  • Provide advice on the development of promotional and educational materials that are culturally inclusive for First Nations people.
  • undertake ad-hoc projects and other activities relevant to the role’s key accountabilities as approved by the Manager and commensurate to the role’s classification level.
  •  Monitor program outcomes and community feedback to inform continuous improvement.

About you

  • are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, in accordance with the University of Sydney Confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander cultures and communities
  • a degree in health or medical is desirable or equivalent relevant training and experience
  • demonstrate the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities (remove for targeted roles)
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, Elders, leaders, and organizations
  • Proven ability to  collaborate with internal teams to integrate cultural sensitivity and relevance into program planning and delivery.
