About the role

Prison officers support the rehabilitation of people in custody and help maintain the safety and security of the facility.

Most people in custody return to the community, and the focus of a prison officer is to create opportunities for them to make better decisions in their lives.

It’s a challenging yet rewarding role and is considered one of the best kept secrets in the Victorian public service.

We have facilities across the state including Victoria’s newest correctional centre, Western Plains. Western Plains is a state-of-the-art facility in Lara, and we are now recruiting for prison officers to be a part of the team. Find out more about this exciting opportunity via our website.

About you

Do you have a passion for making a difference in your community and want to work with a diverse range of people? This could be the job for you.

If you’re a good communicator and enjoy achieving positive outcomes, then you have the qualities needed to become a prison officer.

There are no specific qualifications needed, but you must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or hold Australian permanent residency. You must also hold an Australian driver’s licence (minimum P2).

What’s in it for you

✔ Earn up to $88,546 with a base salary of $61,620 plus penalty rates and overtime
✔ Annual salary increases, 5 weeks annual leave, 3 weeks personal leave and provisions for study leave
✔ 41 days comprehensive paid training (full time)
✔ Complete a Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Adult Custodial)
✔ Regional relocation assistance of up to $10,000 for a move to regional Victoria.*

$5,000 sign-on bonus

New prison officers are now eligible for a bonus of up to $5,000. Six months after commencing, you will receive a payment of $2,500. Then, after one year’s full-time employment, you will receive an additional payment of $2,500. Conditions apply, see website for details.
