About the opportunity
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) seeks experienced Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) professionals to join the Regulatory Oversight team as a CASA Inspector (RPAS). The role is crucial in ensuring the safe and compliant operation of RPAS in Australia. We seek candidates who work collaboratively and cohesively with their colleagues, peers, and regulated entities while conducting RPAS operations per CASA’s regulatory framework.
The CASA Inspector (RPAS) performs entry control assessments for certified RPAS operators, technical assessments for regulatory authorisations, provides and coordinates high quality, expert technical and regulatory support and advice, and ongoing oversight of RPAS operations. This engagement requires a proficient understanding of risk-management principles and techniques to effectively manage existing and emerging RPAS-related risks and enable technical and regulatory development of RPAS capability within Australia.
In collaboration with the team, the CASA Inspector (RPAS) provides a positive and supportive contribution to enhancing the team’s overall performance.
The CASA Inspector (RPAS) is responsible for the delivery of the following functions as they relate to RPAS:
- Evaluate and make recommendations on submissions for approvals, permissions, exemptions and other instruments relating to RPAS and exercise delegations where appropriate.
- Conduct desktop and onsite assessments of intending RPAS Operators and make recommendations in relation to the certification of an operator.
- Contributing to the planning and implementation of the RPAS surveillance program, including, the oversight of RPAS training organisations.
- Contributing to the planning and oversight of highly complex RPAS trials and operations to advance technical and regulatory development.
- Assisting in educating both internal and external parties in supporting the pragmatic and safe operation of RPAS.
- Provide CASA Management with high-level technical advice and support on the RPAS aspects of operations and the broader aviation industry.
- Managing the resolution of identified deficiencies by a certified RPAS operator.
- Support the development of legislative change as it applies to RPAS.
- Assist the RPAS team in developing and maintaining internal systems, documents, and policies that support the RPAS and regulatory services team.
- Ensuring accurate records and information are maintained and supporting all regulatory functions and team reporting requirements.
- Work supportively and cooperatively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to achieve shared outcomes.
- Promote workplace safety, equity and diversity, and act in accordance with the CASA Values and Behaviours.
- Other duties as required.
The CASA Inspector (RPAS) works under general direction and will demonstrate and exercise initiative and judgment in providing highly developed technical knowledge and expertise in complex or unusual matters where existing standards, policies and procedures may not cover the circumstances. These roles require highly developed regulatory knowledge to undertake work of a challenging or complex nature and may include undertaking detailed or sensitive projects that have broader impacts on CASA.

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience:
- Strong technical knowledge of certified RPAS operations, including recent relevant experience applying this expertise to large and/or complex RPAS organisations.
- In-depth understanding of Australian civil aviation legislation, regulations, policies, and reporting requirements, with proven application in a regulatory environment.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities to resolve complex, ambiguous issues, supported by effective stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and assimilate technical knowledge from a diverse team to develop comprehensive solutions.
- Stakeholder management:
- Experience in building and managing productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders through effective written and oral communication.
- Ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and communities in a sensitive, respectful, and equitable manner, ensuring inclusive and culturally aware practices.

The following ideal candidate requirements are desirable:
- Desirable knowledge and experience:
- Recent experience in Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations and RePL training is highly regarded.
- Experience in project management, with a sound understanding of managing projects from initiation to completion, ensuring alignment with aviation safety outcomes.
The following ideal candidate qualifications are desirable:
Relevant aviation qualifications such as pilot, engineer, or air traffic controller qualifications

Eligibility requirements
Employment with CASA is subject to conditions prescribed within the Civil Aviation Act 1988. The following eligibility requirements apply to this position:
- Hold a Remote Pilot Licence or military equivalent qualification.
- Must be an Australia citizen
- Undergo pre-employment screening including a Police Check.
- Currently holds an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) card or have the ability to obtain and hold one.
