Aboriginal Client & Community Support Officer | Aboriginal Services Unit

About Us

Communities and Justice (DCJ) enables services to work better together to support everyone’s right to access justice, support families, and strengthen/bolster the promotion of early intervention and inclusion, with benefits for the whole community.

The Aboriginal Services Unit (ASU) is a specialist team within the DCJ that delivers service to frontline clients and community through the Circle Sentencing program, Aboriginal Community Justice Groups and our service delivery in Local courts. We also influence diversion strategies, projects and policy development through our informed and expert knowledge of Aboriginal people experiencing the NSW justice system as victims and offenders.

About the role

The role provides project support and effective customer service to Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal clients attending court.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing support for a range of Aboriginal targeted projects to Aboriginal clients and communities.
  • Preparing correspondence and reports and maintain filing, record and data systems to ensure they are accurate, accessible and secure.
  • Providing culturally appropriate front line customer service & project delivery.
  • Collating, interpreting, managing and disseminating information to support project development and implementation.
  • Undertaking research to enhance project delivery and outcomes.
  • Promoting projects and services to Aboriginal clients and communities

About You:

We’re seeking someone who demonstrates the following skills and attributes:

  • Ability to work independently and manage your own work. Including working both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • A commitment to a culture of team work, excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Client service skills with an empathic approach to clients.
  • Proficiency in Databases and Microsoft office
  • A strong commitment to customer service.

Essential requirements of the role:

  • This is an Aboriginal identified position and applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent Aboriginality – typically all or the majority of the work of an Aboriginal identified role will involve the development and or delivery of policy, programs and services which impact on Aboriginal people and or involve liaising directly with Aboriginal people and communities.
  • A current driver’s licence (unrestricted) and willingness to travel is required (regional locations only).
  • It is an essential requirement of the role that successful applicants are fully vaccinated and able to provide acceptable proof of vaccination status.

Note: In accordance with Clause 26 of the Government Sector Employment (General) Rules 2014 and in accordance with Sections 14 and 21 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 the Department of Communities and Justice considers that being of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this role and preference will be given to candidates who meet the pre-established standards:

  • Documented verification of Aboriginality.

The Department will accept proof of Aboriginality confirming the following:

  1. You are an aboriginal person of Aboriginal descent;
  2. You identify as being Aboriginal; and
  3. You are accepted as such by the community in which you live.

An acceptable form of documented verification is a “Confirmation of Aboriginality” letter, provided to you by a local Aboriginal organisation that includes a common seal from that organisation.
