Committee Secretary

Are you a leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment where you can use your strong research, writing, management and stakeholder engagement skills to make a difference, and inspire a team to do the same?

The Committee Office provides high-quality research and administrative and procedural support to several parliamentary committees, who scrutinise executive government action including legislation, and contribute to policy and legislative development.

Committees work on matters of importance in Queensland, ranging from community safety, environmental law, regional industry development, transport, human rights, legislative principles and almost everything in between. Supporting stakeholder engagement in parliamentary democracy is key to our work.  Forming the leadership team within the Committee Office, our Committee Secretaries lead smaller teams to:

  • Support committee consideration of proposed legislation (Bills) for their policy implications, compliance with fundamental legislative principles and human rights, and the lawfulness of subordinate legislation;
  • Support committees to examine the estimates, public accounts, public works and performance of various departments and statutory bodies, assessing their integrity, economy, efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Support committees to undertake inquiries on matters relating to their portfolio areas of responsibility, or on any issue referred to them by the Legislative Assembly or under an Act;
  • Advise committees on parliamentary law, practice and procedure; and
  • Plan and support committee hearings, consultations, and site visits, prepare briefings and reports, and communicate with stakeholders, in a high-profile environment.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification;
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyse and evaluate complex problems and develop strategic recommendations;
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to navigate complex environments and to facilitate consultation processes;
  • Excellent writing skills are a must;
  • Proven ability to lead small teams;
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy and professionalism; and
  • Knowledge of parliamentary processes and procedures, particularly relating to committees, or the ability to acquire such knowledge quickly.

This temporary role is available for a 12 month duration
