Support Worker – Cultural (Identified)

Location: Anglicare SQ – Children & Families – Gold Coast, QLD

About the Position

Anglicare’s Children & Families have a long history of providing family and children support services, including family intervention, foster and kinship care, counselling, relationship support and much more. Our Foster & Kinship Care programs provide support to children and young people who are placed in out of home care, whilst Family Intervention Service staff are working closely with families to provide support to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their children.

We are currently looking for a Support Worker – Cultural to work across multiple programs, delivering practical supports to clients in line with their individual intervention, support or care plans. There will be a strong focus on supporting non-Indigenous foster carers and staff to better understand the needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children in care and to respond in a holistic way that considers family, spiritual, community and individual needs. This is a part time, six month contract based in the Gold Coast, and covering the surrounding region.

It is a genuine occupational requirement of this role to identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, under S25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld).

About You

Offering a background in child, youth or family support, you will have a passion for cultural awareness and a focus on the best possible outcome for children. Your abilities will include:

  • Support services to vulnerable children & families and an understanding of the impact statutory systems can have
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and identify with this heritage
  • Experience in culturally sensitive intervention strategies with families caring for children at risk of, or in, statutory care
  • Development of meaningful connections for children of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island heritage to their family, community, country & culture
  • A dedication to providing support, training and advice to non-Indigenous Foster Carers and staff to develop their cultural understanding
  • Assisting to implement relevant cultural plans and journeys for young people and their family

Your ability to work effectively as part of a care team will be coupled with:

  • Exceptional communication skills including the capacity to relate effectively with management, staff, carers, children and their families
  • A ‘can do’ attitude and proactive approach to problem solving and creating successful outcomes
  • Respect for the confidentiality of all parties and an understanding of each child’s individual journey
  • A willingness and enthusiasm to couple with statutory child protection services, and other external stakeholders to provide best outcome
  • Strong time management, prioritisation and collaboration skills, with experience of working to deadlines in a changing environment

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • It is a genuine occupational requirement of this role to identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, under S25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld)
  • A Certificate IV in Child, Youth & Family, Community Services, Youth Work or similar. A relevant degree would be beneficial
  • First Aid Certificate with CPR
  • A valid Blue Card (Working with Children)
  • A current Queensland Driver Licence and the ability to work flexible hours which will include mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends
