1. Position Overview
The Lecturer Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care is responsible for the delivery of quality Vocational Education and Training (VET) within the context of Batchelor Institute’s role as Australia’s leading First Nations Tertiary Education and Research provider.
VET Lecturer positions within Batchelor Institute are aligned to the IBSA VET Practitioner Capability Framework adapted to the Batchelor Institute context.
The Lecturer Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care is responsible for the development and delivery of innovative VET programs underpinned by the Batchelor Institute Both-ways principles of practice as well as contributing to the delivery of approved training programs within the areas of Indigenous primary health care and community services.
In addition, the lecturer Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care will assist the Senior Lecturer Health with particular duties:
- Teaching, management and facilitation of culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities;
- Student assessments, maintenance of student records, supervision of students, and monitoring student progression;
- Liaison with remote Aboriginal communities and health industry partners;
- Participate in research activities and all requirements of the course and Directorate of Humanities, Division of Further Education and;
- Development of teaching resources and assessment material.
Detailed Statement of Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards

- Investigate a range of learning theories to expand and improve teaching repertoire for a range of
- Design learning programs based on the Batchelor Institute Learning and Teaching Framework which meet industry expectations and provide meaningful learning experiences.
- Develop and implements models for learner connectedness; demonstrate a range of facilitation strategies to respond to diverse learner needs; seek guidance from appropriate Aboriginal advisors and shares practices in the use of alternative delivery methods contextualised to Aboriginal learners.
- Evaluate program outcomes using established tools and techniques; modify program design in response to evaluation outcomes.
- Use contemporary assessment research and theory to inform and expand practice.
- Design, develop and evaluate assessment tools for purposes including RPL and assessment of training outcomes; use a variety of technologies to develop and implement the tools.
- Adapt assessment approaches as required for different contexts and candidates; review assessment processes and identify improvements; provide assessment feedback to support continued learning.
- Actively contribute to assessment validation processes; use validation outcomes to improve practice.
1.3 Industry and Community Engagement
- Build relationships with enterprises, communities and stakeholders to ensure learning programs, and related assessment, to meet learners’ needs.
- Engage in industry and community networks to support sharing of vocational, and learning and assessment, knowledge and skills.
- Implement approaches to build vocational competence, leading to credibility with industry and community.
- Design training and other solutions to meet identified workforce development needs.
1.4 Systems and Compliance
- Develop approaches to meet compliance requirements of the Standards for RTO’s 2015 and other relevant legislation and continually improves practice.
- Monitor activities of VET system stakeholders and use this knowledge in program design.
- Contextualise training packages and accredited courses to source and select best products to meet learner needs.
- Support policy development and generate ideas for improvements; support colleagues’ use of Batchelor Institute electronic management systems.
1.5 Both Ways Cultural Competence
- Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the variety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural differences and seek guidance from appropriate Aboriginal advisors to develop strategies to ensure culturally appropriate teaching
1.6 Evidence Based Practice and Research
- Seek out and critically analyse information and research sources about VET practice and the VET sector; undertake role-appropriate research into own practice and within own environment.
- Share knowledge and experience with team; demonstrate self-awareness;
- provide a positive role model for colleagues and learners
- Support colleagues in ethical decision-making; respect confidences; model Batchelor Institute values.
- Generate ideas to provide new and creative ways of working; design and implement resources with the aim of translating them into digital learning modes; support colleagues with digital learning practices.

Essential selection criteria
Applicants must demonstrate they are able to undertake the responsibilities of the position as contained in the position description and are able to meet the following Key Selection Criteria:
2.1 Qualifications and Licensing
The successful candidate must possess a relevant vocational qualification at the diploma or degree level, combined with a minimum of 3 years Industry/professional/vocational experience. Relevant postgraduate qualifications will also be an asset,
The successful applicant will hold
- The minimum vocational teaching qualification Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAE40110 (or equivalent) and/or Diploma or higher level qualification in adult education
- The Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
- Three (3) years’ experience as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner or Registered Nurse with current registration with AHPRA.
2.2 Domains of Work
Demonstrated knowledge and successful experience of Vocational Education and Training, including student progression that will enable vocational training and education programs in the relevant teaching areas to be researched, prepared, delivered, assessed, evaluated and administered in a variety of contexts, including remote contexts, and workplace delivery, with reference to the above Domains of Work requirements.
2.3 Work Skills
Demonstrated understanding of and significant personal and interpersonal skills for working effectively as a team member to achieve outcomes within an Aboriginal Vocational and Training context as per the above Work Skill requirements.
2.4 Working with Aboriginal people
Well-developed knowledge of the social, political and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as relevant to Vocational Education and Training, and demonstrated capacity to work effectively and communicate appropriately with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, communities, organisations and staff members.
2.5 VET Management and Administration
Demonstrated understanding of and previous successful experience in complying with VET management and administration policies, procedures and business rules
2.6 NT Context
Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory by land, sea or air (eg. in a light aircraft), possess a Northern Territory ‘C’ class driver’s licence with experience driving on unformed roads, and be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation and in various environmental settings available to the Batchelor Institute staff.
2.7 Legislation and regulatory requirements
Knowledge of and experience in implementing relevant legislation and regulatory requirements in the work place (insert any specific requirements)
- Certified copies of qualifications and evidence of experience MUST be submitted.
- A Staff Skills Matrix must be completed and endorsed by the Institute prior to an employment contract being offered.
Salary: $89,602 – $106,403 + Superannuation
